IWC Executive

The IWC has an Executive Group that acts in a technical and advisory role. It is made up of leading researchers and practitioners from IWC members and partners.

 

 

Amanda Bigelow

Executive Manager, International Riverfoundation

Amanda Bigelow has a well established career in conservation and natural resource management, particularly in the development of regional and river catchment management in Australia and the Asia Pacific Region.  Amanda’s skills are in strategic and action planning, and in knowledge brokering in complex cross cultural contexts.   Amanda has successfully led multiple stakeholder groups from community, (particularly indigenous and local peoples) government, business and industry to develop long-term practical partnerships for sustainable development in river catchments. 
Amanda’s work is underpinned with a Bachelor of Applied Science, and in 1995 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to further develop her knowledge and skills.  In May 2006, Amanda joined the International Riverfoundation as the Executive Manager – her passion and commitment is to facilitate a global movement of leaders in the protection and management of the world’s rivers. 

 

Professor Stuart Bunn

Director, Centre for Riverine Landscapes, Griffith University

Professor Bunn’s major research interests are in the ecology of river and wetland systems with a particular focus on ecosystem processes, and he has published widely on this topic. He has extensive experience in the development and management of large collaborative R&D projects, for organizations such as Land and Water Australia and the CRC for Freshwater Ecology, and is currently Deputy Executive Manager (Research) for the newly formed eWater CRC. Professor Bunn also devotes a considerable proportion of his time working with international, Federal and State agencies and community groups on water resource management issues.

 

Professor Peter Davies

Director, Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management, UWA

Prof Davies’ research focuses on maintaining the ecological health of rivers and streams in agricultural landscapes. He is particularly interested in ecological water requirements of rivers and flow allocation. Since 2000 he has published three book chapters and 22 refereed international journal articles. His research projects since 2000 have attracted over $2.5m in funding.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Associate Professor Paul Lant

Chemical Engineering, University of Queensland

Paul Lant has an international reputation in the field of biological wastewater treatment and has secured over AUD$2 million in competitive R&D funding, and over $3 million in collaborative industrial support. He established, in conjunction with Prof Jurg Keller, the Advanced Wastewater Management Centre (AWMC) which is widely acknowledged as the leading R&D group in biological wastewater treatment in Australia. Ass Prof Lant is a leading chemical engineering educator, receiving awards for undergraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision innovation. He has successfully started a number of commercial ventures including the Wastewater Futures group of companies. Paul is also Director of IWES, the leading training provider for environmental professionals in Australia.

Dr Eva Abal

Scientific Coordinator, SEQ Healthy Waterways Partnership

Dr Eva Abal’s major scientific expertise and research interests include scientific management and coordination of multidisciplinary projects, ecophysiology of marine communities, with emphasis on their use as biological indicators of various impacts on ecosystems, effective science communication, strategic research planning and facilitating linkages between scientists and managers/stakeholders. Eva oversees the management of scientific activities of the South East Queensland Healthy Waterways Partnership (SEQHWP), including quality assurance of scientific activities and information, research plan/design development, and dissemination of information to stakeholders. Eva coordinates the SEQHWP’s Scientific Expert Panel, a consortium of experts, which oversees the strategic research direction to achieve the Healthy Waterways vision. Eva’s passion is in the synthesis and effective communication of scientific information, making science relevant and useful to stakeholders and managers.
