Peter Oliver, Senior Lecturer

Peter leads the development and delivery of International Water Centre education and training products, in particular the Master of Integrated Water Management Program. He is also involved in integrated water management research with partner universities. Peter was previously a Principal Natural Resource Officer (Science) with Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Water. His work in this role involved research on social science aspects of collaborative natural resource management, particularly water and catchment planning and management.

Dr Oliver is also Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Governance and Public Policy, Department of Politics and Public Policy, Griffith University. Peter has academic qualifications in ecology, land use management, education and social science and over twenty years experience in citizen participation and natural resource management education and extension, particularly in the areas of water and catchment management.

 

Associate Professor Paul Lant

Paul Lant has an international reputation in the field of biological

wastewater treatment and has secured over AUD$2 million in competitive R&D funding, and over $3 million in collaborative industrial support. He established, in conjunction with Prof Jurg Keller, the Advanced Wastewater Management Centre (AWMC) which is widely acknowledged as the leading R&D group in biological wastewater treatment in Australia. Ass Prof Lant is a leading chemical engineering educator, receiving awards for undergraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision innovation. He has successfully started a number of commercial ventures including the Wastewater Futures group of companies. Paul is also Director of IWES, the leading training provider for environmental professionals in Australia.

Kwame Mfodwo

IWC lecturer Kwame Mfodwo (right), shown here in Senegal with the Solicitor-General of The Gambia and an IUCN policy officer, providing training on natural resource access agreements. A lecturer in natural resources law and policy at Monash Law School, Mr. Mfodwo brings to IWC his extensive experience working with government bodies and NGOs in Africa, the Asia-Pacific and North America.

 He has assisted the Government of Ghana with negotiation of major natural resource agreements, drafted legislation for Pacific Island States on the implementation of the Law of the Sea convention, and provided policy advice to the Governments of New Zealand and Australia on the participation of indigenous people in the marine sector. He has also provided policy advice to WWF, IUCN, Packard Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts.

 

Professor Helen Ross

Professor Ross is an environmental psychologist and anthropologist and Professor of Rural Community Development at The University of Queensland. She has extensive experience in community participation in natural resource management, collaborative planning and management processes involving communities and agencies, and social impact assessment.She has worked throughout Australia on indigenous natural resource management and in Thailand and other countries of Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

 

Professor Peter Davies

Professor Peter Davies, here with a young boy at Lake Bam in Burkina Faso where IWC has been working with the International Riverfoundation and the Alexander River Restoration Administration to explore options for lake restoration and livelihoods improvement. Professor Davies is the Director of the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management at The University of Western Australia.  He brings to IWC internationally recognised expertise on ecological processes in streams and rivers, particularly in agricultural landscapes. Professor Davies has worked extensively across Australia, advising national, state and local governments as well as industry on aquatic ecology and river health. He has served on Australian government delegations to South Africa and New Zealand and has worked in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Timor Leste.

He is currently the Project Director of IWC’s Australian Water Research Facility for the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), which focuses on catchement risk assessment in Pacific Islands.

 

Professor Stuart Bunn

Professor Stuart Bunn here on the floodplain in Windorah, Queensland, conducting fish sampling after a flood. Professor Bunn is one of Australia’s leading researchers on riverine and wetland ecology and is currently the Director of the Australia Rivers Institute at Griffith University, Australia's largest group of university-based scientists with expertise in river, catchment and coastal research.  Professor Bunn’s research on aquatic ecosystem function has earned national and international recognition.

He is currently a member of the Scientific Steering Committee for the Global Water System Project and has previously served as a member of the Scientific Committee for Water Research for the International Council of Science.  In addition to his work on numerous collaborative research projects, Professor Bunn works with international and national agencies and community groups on water resource management issues.

Dr. Eva Abal

Dr Eva Abal (fourth from right), with senior managers of the Philippines National Water Resources Board after a training workshop in integrated water resource management (IWRM). Dr. Abal is the Scientific Coordinator of South East Queensland’s Healthy Waterways Partnership (HWP), which brings together government, industry and community stakeholders in a collaborative response to regional water quality issues.

Under Dr. Abal’s leadership, HWP has taken the lead on interdisciplinary multistakeholder water quality initiatives in Australia. A rare example of IWRM implemented on the ground, HWP has gained international recognition, with Dr. Abal bringing expertise and lessons learnt to catchments across Asia and worldwide.
