Master of Integrated Water Management (part-time/ distance)
Graduated in 2015
Why did you choose this program?
The MIWM offered a holistic introduction to the water industry, which is exactly what I was looking for. I have a background in chemistry and my water-related work experience was limited to water treatment processes and drinking water quality. The program offered subjects specific to the knowledge gaps I wanted to target, and much more! The balance of course work, field trips and final project appealed to me, and having the option to undertake it part-time meant it was achievable whilst working full-time.
What were the best parts of the program and why?
From my point of view the best part of the program was the program itself! The structure of the course has been carefully considered to ensure students gain a broad knowledge and understanding of the water industry from the perspective of multiple disciplines. Course material is up-to-date, relevant and delivered by passionate and experienced lecturers. Assignments are based on real-world issues and group work promotes learning between students. The field trips were great, and I particularly enjoyed the challenges of the final project.
Did you enjoy studying the program part-time/distance and how did you manage to juggle study/work and other responsibilities during your studies?
Half the course was delivered during the intensives, which made the program more manageable part-time. At times it was a struggle to manage study; I deferred for a year in the middle when it became too difficult to juggle increased work hours as well as family responsibilities.
How do you plan to use what you’ve learned in either your current job or future career?
I have become very interested in decision-making and water planning as a result of undertaking the MIWM and plan to move in that direction in my future career. Whilst undertaking my final project I developed an interest in the social determinants of health and have a strong desire to work in planning and policy to achieve public health outcomes through the management of water. I plan on studying a Master of Public Health next year.
