Stradbroke Island field trip
Two groups of Australian Leadership Awards Fellows from Indonesia and the Philippines visited Stradbroke Island on a two-day field trip.
They visited a local mine to look at post-mining rehabilitation, water use and community engagement.
The group attended a facilitation workshop with a staff member from The University of Queensland's Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies. This workshop looked at issues involved in hosting community meetings and facilitating dialogue between community members and industry.
The students visited Brown Lake, a window lake, where the water table breaks through to the surface.
The students looked at the effects of mainland town water and mining use on water levels in a wetland ecosystem at Eighteen Mile Swamp, and discussed strategies for ensuring the survival of the wetlands.
Students also met with an indigenous resident of the island to discuss indigenous approaches to water management.
