Science-policy integration
A cross-organisational and transdisciplinary collaboration framework will foster outcomes in which research and scientific information is more relevant to policy, as well as outcomes in which policy development and implementation are more knowledge based.
Science–policy interface refers to the exchange between policy-makers and researchers in a two-way dialogue, which enables policy information needs to be determined and appropriate research to be produced to meet and inform these needs. Integrated monitoring programs are critical to the implementation of any policy, so that information on the impact of policies is assessed. Achieving this interactive science–policy interface will enable water management that is based on targeted scientific research and includes an integrated monitoring program.
Example project
SEQ NRM policy-knowledge integration
The IWC devised a framework to facilitate the integration of policy, knowledge and implementation activities in natural resource management. This is designed to support the implementation of the Regional Plan for Natural Resource Management in South East Queensland.
In this integration framework, senior policy advisors and researchers come together to meet natural resource management needs and set new environmental targets using knowledge gained in research. In this manner, discussion of policy and knowledge feeds an ongoing cycle of integration.
Impacts
The policy–knowledge integration framework ensures collaboration between research, management, and monitoring across organisations. This process results in well-informed management decisions based on targeted scientific research and an integrated monitoring program.
