Some estimates predict that Libya has 50 years of groundwater left before it runs dry. A team of IWC teaching staff went to Tripoli to run an eight day workshop for senior staff of the Libyan EGA to explore solutions to this issue. It was a highly participatory workshop which looked at leading water resource management practices in Australia and around the world.

The International WaterCentre ran a participatory eight day water education program for senior Libyan Environment General Authority (EGA) and other water management agency staff. The program gave an overview of integrated water management, focusing on lessons learnt in a global and local context, particularly water allocation and water quality legislation, regulation, planning and management; effluent treatment disposal and reuse; and demand management in urban, coastal and agricultural settings.

The group consisted of six women and nine men from various roles and backgrounds in Libyan environmental authorities. The workshop focussed on topics such as governance, improving inter-agency collaboration, coordination and policy integration, and community and industry education and participation in integrated water resource management.

By the end of the program the group had produced a draft conceptual model of Libya’s water resource management and an Integrated Water Resource Management Plan.

This was Stage One of a three stage water education program, designed to build capacity of EGA staff in integrated water management and inform and guide future EGA activity in this area.
